The new MacBook Pro models from Apple, which will theoretically debut with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chipsets, will not be released this month, but according to word of mouth they should appear before the end of the year.
It comes from one of the more reliable sources in all Apple affairs, Mark Gurman (and his ubiquitous) Bloomberg (opens in a new tab) newsletter), in which, among other things, it claims that the new iPad Pro’s are inevitable (exciting), but the MacBook Pros is not (less exciting).
But the good news is that the silicon-powered MacBook Pro M2 Pro and M2 Max – which are a beefed up M2 model, as was the case with the M1 that later came with these variants – are “well on their way to launching in the near future.” “.
Gurman theorizes that the most likely time for these upgraded laptops to arrive is November because, as the whistleblower points out, this has traditionally been the time when new Mac hardware is released. At least, it sounds like he believes they’ll be here by the end of the year; with all the usual skepticism around rumors. (While it’s worth remembering, this isn’t the only time we’ve recently heard speculation about the arrival of MacBook Pro before 2022.)
Gurman notes that the first version of macOS Ventura adds support for these upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks.
Also on the Mac front, Gurman claims that Apple is currently working on a new version of the Mac mini that will have an M2 chip inside.
Analysis: minimal changes, minimal confusion …
The main change for these MacBook Pro laptops will be the addition of these more powerful processors, and Gurman notes that otherwise any differences with these devices will be minimal. So don’t expect much other than a 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro engine upgrade.
It will be a modest premiere, the whistleblower believes, simply because there aren’t any big moves to be seen on the hardware that would make it worthy of some big, sparkling event (or even a small, moderately showy event).
It’s also worth noting that Gurman says he doesn’t expect the MacBooks to arrive soon alongside the iPad Pro, but that doesn’t mean Apple can’t make a surprising move and throw them away. So, you never know, laptops might just arrive sooner than expected (or iPad Pro models might come later).
As for the Mac mini, the M2 version matches previous rumors by Gurman where he claimed Apple was working on the M1 Pro spin on a compact PC (until launch in late 2021 or early 2022), but dropped the idea in for using the M2 chip.
Previously, there seemed to be a Mac mini with a vanilla M2, as well as a model with an M2 Pro, which makes sense when it comes to placing them next to the Mac Studio (the latter is top notch). But we’ll see, and Gurman doesn’t mention what chips can be applied this time.
